On the 30th September, 2024, His Excellency Mr. George Muhali Imbuwa, High Commissioner of the Republic of Zambia to Federal Republic of Nigeria presented his letters of credence to His Excellency Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), accrediting him as High Commissioner Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to ECOWAS. The presentation took place at the headquarters of ECOWAS in Abuja, Nigeria.
High Commissioner conveyed warm greetings from Mr. Hakainde Hichilema President of the Republic of Zambia to the ECOWAS President and the 15 members of ECOWAS. He reformed Zambia’s commitment to continue collaborating with ECOWAS, in order to ensure mutual and common goals such as peace, stability and democracy are upheld in Africa as a whole.
His Excellency commended ECOWAS for its ongoing efforts to foster economic cooperation among member countries in order to increase living standards and promote economic development. Similarly, to Zambia’s attempts to maintain regional peace, stability, and security through the Southern African Development Community (SADC), ECOWAS continues to work on some security issues and has developed a peacekeeping force forconflicts in the region.
During the talks with the ECOWAS President, High Commissioner emphasized the need for ECOWAS Members States to continue engaging non-member states on the African continent to develop positive economic strategies that would boost economic trade among African countries.
In response, the ECOWAS President applauded Zambia’s efforts to promote peace on the African continent. He stated that the ECOWAS hopes that African countries will eventually reduce visa restrictions in order to stimulate trade. The ECOWAS President also stated that it was simpler to obtain visas for nations outside of Africa and more difficult to obtain our own in Africa, which has contributed to low levels of trade activity among African countries.
In closing, Zambia’s High Commissioner emphasized the country’s continuous commitment to working with ECOWAS for the benefit of the entire African continent.
